Am I finally posting where I was this time a year ago? Mayyyyyyybe.
Last February I checked Las Vegas off the list of places to see in the United States, arriving the day after many were leaving from the Super Bowl. To be perfectly honest, the city isn’t my kind of town, but I spent some time touring the city. It’s an interesting mix between the outdated and brand new.
Among the new is the world-famous Sphere, which is wild to see even from the outside.
This is a snap inside the Shop at Crystals mall, designed by Daniel Libeskind.
Immediately adjacent is are the Veer Towers designed by another starchitect, Helmet Jahn.
And then there’s the Cleveland Clinic by Frank Gehry.
It’s rare for me to lack connection with a city, whether I like it or not, but I really wasn’t feeling it. Unfortunately I failed to fit in the Hoover Dam in my itinerary and hope to visit if returning to the area. But for my birthday I did get to hike around Valley of Fire State Park, which was very fun and invigorating.

I love traveling the West and seeing massive formations you’d never see in any other part of the country. These grandeur landscapes sometimes feel alien in nature and you can imagine the great forces of nature that caused them a couple billion years ago.

From Nevada I ventured to Joshua Tree National Park and along the way in southern California got up to some of my old habits.

Joshua Tree was a major bucket list item, it’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit since writing a book report on it in second grade. Two days worth of hiking didn’t disappoint and I’d love to see the area in full bloom! Floral colors would’ve been neat but wound up taking a lot of black and white imagery in response to the dead of winter climate.
I had a sunset and and evening of very good weather and was able to take long-exposure photography underneath the stars. As someone accustomed to living in cities, I’ll never get tired of looking into the infinite sky.

I’d promise I’ll never take a year to share photos from a trip again, but you know…
