In recent years I’ve had the pleasure of working with Raleigh architecture firm Studio 310 on many of their design projects in the area. As a result it’s led to a deep foray into capturing dentist offices which combines their expertise in architecture, interiors, and graphics.
The first time we worked together was on Langworthy Family Dentistry in Fuquay-Varina, NC, a complete-build. showcasing the modern form and relationship between inside and outside.
From the outside, one can see into each patient bay and vice versa.
The playful interiors of Cary Pediatrics is probably one of my favorite shoots in the healthcare arena over the last few years. I enjoyed the balance between clean, modern wall-coverings and textured, the perforated metal ceiling, bold wall graphics,
and various-colored bird installations along the wall and hanging from the ceiling.
My focus in taking pictures is to make the viewer feel that they’re part of the scene – as if they were there – as opposed to feeling distant from the scene. In the photo below, my camera is positioned just above cabinet-height, displaying the tree-covering above, and seeing the flying birds in the upper window beyond.
Lines steal the show in North Carolina Implants and Periodontics in Raleigh, NC, dominated by the suspended wood slat ceiling above, penetrated by the central reception desk. Here spaces appear carved out and there was a keen sensitivity towards the graphics and wayfinding.
Past the waiting area are the dentist bays and lab space.
Finally, is the fresh-looking minimal interior of Signature Smiles in Cary, North Carolina. Wood paneling sets the tone as a continuous form, rooted at the column wrap signage in the reception area, stretching upwards to the drop ceiling that ventures deeper inside and reaching back down to contain each patient unit.
I’ve very much valued the relationship with Studio 310, they’ve been great to collaborate with and it’s they’ve certainly kept me on their toes with their design!
