Get In Where I Can Fit In

This is the least amount of “for fun” photography I’ve managed in about two years, so I fit it in whenever I get a chance! Took 30 minutes to head downtown Raleigh one evening and catch sunset at the BB&T building.

On Sunday, I took 30 minutes out of my work schedule to go to the annual Bikefest held in downtown Raleigh.

And while in business near Atlanta, Georgia, I took 15 minutes out of my work schedule to shoot this roadside country scene.

And that’s 75 minutes worth of photography in about three weeks!

June 23 – August 8, 2010: Long Time No Blog

Some takes from this past Saturday with the Triangle Photography Club and Raleigh Outdoor Photography Club.

(I’ve obviously been watching too much John Rosenthal photography)

At the state capitol, I played a bit with the tilt-function on my lens, so the entire image isn’t exactly sharp. Oddly enough, I think the subtle difference helped bring more attention to the entablature and columns.

And finally, the Wachovia Capitol Center – something about this monolithic thing always brings out a different photograph each time I pass it.

One of the unexpected side effects of going full force into professional photography is that I rarely shoot simply for the fun of it. The general tasks of starting up and marketing a business, not to mention performing the work has greatly reduced the time I have to shoot otherwise. However, I do go out once in awhile, sometimes joining fun groups such as the Triangle Photography Club during their outings. In fact, I’ve been using them as my main source for doing such things!

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
A couple weekends ago, I had what boiled down to a 36 hour trip to Charlotte. Hopefully I’ll get there for a longer period so I can spend more time seeing friends and viewing more sites.

Got to scoop out the new addition to the North Carolina Museum of Art for the first time this weekend. I skipped the opening last weekend in order to avoid the crowds. Pretty neat addition, I’ll be checking it out more in the near future.

Yes. That is a ginormous metal tree in front of the addition.

Photos from one of the zen gardens with many official Rodin sculpture replicas.

Re-visited Gyre for the first time in a long time – broke out the tilt-shift lens. I love my 17mm TS-E, it provides some fantastic super-sharp images.

I did attempt a “miniature” with the tilted focal-plane, which I didn’t do as well as I would’ve liked – I figured out what I was doing wrong which I’ll address at the end of this thing.

Upon leaving the NCMOA I went downtown to catch sunset and early evening. These are cranes where the new Lightner Public Safety Center is being built.

I then went to Fayetteville Street to do some evening shots by the BB&T building.

Again, I attempted some tilt photography. Upon review, I know what I was doing in all of these pictures – in all of these photos, I tilted the photos horizontally, which caused the sharp part of the picture to be vertical. In order to do this properly, at least in these photos, I needed to rotate the lens so that I tilted vertically (which can be easily done with Canon tilt-shifts, not Nikon. ;) ) and the sharp portion of the image was horizontal. Now that I figured what I was doing wrong, I’m looking forward to getting back at it. By the way, did I mention how much I’m madly in love with this lens?
