North Carolina Architectural Photography – Stanhope Student Housing

The Stanhope student housing development is another architectural photography assignment in my backyard of Raleigh, North Carolina for Little Architecture. Having photographed modern student apartments throughout the South, it’s obvious that these aren’t your parents’ apartments. These kids are getting it all these days.

You know – back in MY day…

…er, uh sorry – was getting carried away with myself.  Anyways, Stanhope is located on an urban block near North Carolina State University.  As many of these projects go nowadays it’s mixed-use featuring mercantile spaces and shops open to street level.

As brand-new construction, Stanhope has the feel of a renovated industrial warehouse without the original warehouse.  There’s quite a colorful palette of interior design, furniture selection, and art installation throughout the public spaces.  It was a photographic challenge lining things up and creating clear views among the reinforced concrete structural columns.

The two-story entry lobby flows into a sitting area with multi-television display featuring video art on the ground floor.

A metallic-looking wall covering connects lower level lobby to the mezzanine above.

The mezzanine is a study area that connects some of the building’s amenities to the apartment stacks.

Back to the lower level, is this not the most colorful media lab you’ve seen?  Love the chairs.  There are computer, ipad stations, and a kitchenette.

Color and art are integrated throughout Stanhope’s amenity spaces.  This large wall installation highlights the two-story fitness facility.

Such a large student housing complex can be confusing to get around, especially for visitors.  Little designed some simple, colorful wayfinding on each level to demarcate each floor and direct users where they need to go.

By the way, the apartments ain’t bad either.

Lastly is the pool area.  Intermediate between the pool and fitness area (wrapped in red brick) is an outdoor lounge and grills.  The apartments wrap around the space with views of the pool below and sky above.  Both Little and Stanhope did a nice job with the colors.

Did I mention I lived in a bare-bones dorm with painted cinder-block walls?  Alright, that’s it, see you next time. 🙂
